... about Daejong Film Awards 2013 and Park Si Hoo's talent

The 50th edition of Daejong Film Awards has chosen the winners.

I wanted to know something about the jury. I found out (in English), not too much, from site visitkorea.or.kr – Festivals: “Designed to promote Korean films, Daejong Film Festival is the oldest film award ceremony in Korea and the only film award program hosted by the government. Each year’s winners are selected based on opinions of festival-goers and film experts.” I think that besides festival-goers and film experts, in jury was at least one representative of Minister of Culture and Information – the host.

… and “The best new director” award goes to Jung Byung Gil for “Confession of Murder”, Congratulations!!!

…and “The best new actor” award goes to Kim Soo Hyun for his performance in “Secretly, Greatly”…

Kim Soo Hyun is a very young actor, 25 years old, who had the advantage to debut in dramas as adolescent or maybe as child actor. I saw only two works of Kim Soo Hyun: ”The Moon that embraces the Sun”, the drama and “Secretly, Greatly”, the movie. In my opinion, his acting at this stage of his career isn’t egregious. The way he play the movie’s character Won Ryu Hwan/Bang Dong-Goo reminds me of Bi (Rain) and his style of acting.

The time of exposure on screen of Kim Soo Hyun’s character is larger than Park Si Hoo’s character Lee Doo-Suk indeed, but in art, counts the quality not quantity, isn’t it?

I am a film viewer not an expert or critic, but I can affirm that the difference between Kim Soo Hyun’s acting talent and Park Si Hoo’s acting talent is the difference between a chrysalis and a butterfly.

If I wished this award for Park Si Hoo was not as a confirmation of his value as an actor, but more as an open door for his comeback in a smooth way if this would be possible.

I call generically Park Si Hoo’s talent, the acting talent together with all his wonderful qualities and skills, which serve and enrich his acting talent. Some of them are God-given gifts; others are obtained through hard work. Similar to the butterfly, who works through different stages (egg stage, larvae stage, cocoon (chrysalis) stage and metamorphosis) to become the beautiful creature it is, Park Si Hoo’s talent has grown, improved and refined along the years. At this moment of his life, Park Si Hoo’s talent is like a splendid butterfly spreading joy and beauty to the world.

This Butterfly cannot be ignored or played down, cannot be hidden and cannot be stopped from its flying. Why? Because the world already saw, recognized and treasured it. How about others, “there is none so blind as those who will not see”, what a pity for them.

  1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the Daejong now all Awards have been delivered, Daniela. I am of the opinion that Park Si Hoo should have received the Award for Best New Actor. However, as the saying goes: "The Best does not always win". Given his talent and determination to return to screen Park Si Hoo will be given new chances.

    1. Hi Wilma!
I used the metaphor of the chrysalis and butterfly to express the same opinion as you. I hope that who read the post can understand.

    2. Hi Daniela!
Someone with basic knowledge of English only may find difficulty with the meaning of metaphores. When they read the entire post they will understand you don't agree with the outcome of the Daejong for Best New Actor.

  2. Daniela, If I said I's waiting for your comment about this news. Can you believe me ? I have many difficulty to digest this news myself. It likes they handed a little kid a cookie and said I will give you a cookie but they lie because they know they'll never give it to him.

I can't make any comment about this winner's acting skill because I never seen any of his performance. But this is the story that happened almost 2 years ago at Beaksang Awards in 2011 and this award for the best actor for TV Drama. The 5 nominees were 4 veteran actors ( including PSH from the Princess' man ) and a young actor from drama " The moon embraces the sun ". There were a lot of rumors that the young actor would get the award even before the ceremony started then none of 4 veteran actors were at the ceremony. Yes, all 4 of them, That doesn't tell you something. And if I can find you the footage of that ceremony when this young actor found out he got an award, his expression was exactly the same as this time at Daejong. Why? Because everything was already set up before and the guy knew it.

I can think only 2 reasons why they kindly put PSH's names over there :
    1. His name's still worth it, they can boost the advertise & the interest of PSH's fans & others
    2. They want to say we recognize you, but it's not the time for you to come back yet. Let a new kid get it and go to your hiding place another year then come back and let see what we can do for you!

I'm glad PSH wasn't there, he already knew what a shame of these people. It seems like we still have a lot of work to do to get him back but I believe PSH won't let anyone stop him anymore in 2014. He'll do whatever he think it's best for him. Enough is enough for the self-restraint or what so ever.

And I have no respect or hope for Blue Dragon either but we must use any opportunity to show our love & support for him. This time we need Korean fans to be our presence in every ceremony he will get nominated. But I'm curious about SBS's End of the year awards. What they're going to do ? PSH's excellent performance stood out more than any actors can compare. And No one can deny it! If you talk about business, CDDA will be wanted in many parts of Asian continent or around the world. SBS can ask for a better price if PSH win this award as the best actor of the year or the Grand prize that he deserves! I'm really curious!

Thank you, Daniela! You never disappoint me!^^ Love it, keep it coming, please!

    1. Hi Nikki!
Unfortunately this is reality nowadays in Skorea. When a festival is hosted by the government the jury cannot be independent. Maybe the film experts made the selection of actors, actresses, directors and movies on each category indeed, but the jury awards. Who are those festival-goers whose opinions count? I knew that something is fishy.
"The moon that embraces the sun" is a 2012 MBC production so it is about Beaksang Art Awards 2012 - the best drama and top excellence actor KSH. Maybe it was MBC turn to win, just like that. Fishy again, because TPM is far away greater than TMTETS.
I'm curious about SBS's awards too.

    2. Nikki, unfortunately Park Si Hoo isn't nominated for SBS 2013 Drama Awards. CDDA is on the list with all the SBS' 2013 productions as nominee, but that's all. The truth is that CDDA without Park Si Hoo simply doesn't exist and that is visible from airplane.
